Taking breaks for inspiration

Does this sound familiar?

You’re having a perfectly normal conversation when you stop mid-sentence with the words, ‘Sorry, I just have to go and write something down.’ When I’m beta reading a book, this could be questions for the author, sentences or plot details in the manuscript that are particularly effective and I want to leave a comment about them for the author, or character details I need to remember. It’s usually when doing an unrelated task, or just going for a walk, that how to phrase something or a detail I need to double-check comes into my head.

Knowing when to step away for a time is just as important as knowing when to carry on.
