Novel Study by Kristen Tate analyses ten novels for different narrative elements which authors use to great effect in their novels. The novels cover genres ranging from YA to historical fiction. Every chapter heading asks a question moving from openings to endings by way of topics such as point of view, dialogue, structure and plots.

The last chapter explains how to use the questions posed by the books that are studied to help authors approach and experiment with these elements in their own writing and to choose their own books to analyse and learn from.

The book also includes a very useful index which groups together all the topics and summarises in a sentence the techniques used for each narrative element, such as backstory.

I learnt so much from this book and would highly recommend it.
