I’ve realised I’ve not written about why I got into proofreading. I knew I wanted to continue to help people when I moved from childcare, but needed something more ordered, focused and less stressful. Signing up for a proofreading course was one of the best things I’ve done.
The training allowed me to use my strengths in a different way. This was particularly true of communication. I’ve always been good at listening, and, despite being a stereotypical introvert, having worked or volunteered with people across all age ranges, I can adapt my approach to fit the individual and I’m gaining confidence every day.
I love how there’s always more for me to learn and improve on, helped by advice and book recommendations from the proofreader and editor community plus helpful feedback from the authors I’m very lucky to work with.
To be invited to work on an author’s book is an immense privilege and with that in mind I’ve now started a developmental editing course and hope to add it to my services.
