As an editor or proofreader, you provide a stepping stone between the author and the reader. You hold the author’s intention and the reader’s interpretation in your head at the same time while working on a manuscript.
However, as the author, the reader wants to hear your ideas. If you’re writing nonfiction, your specific experiences, insights and research. If you’re writing fiction, readers want to see your characters, ideas and turn of phrase.
It’s that one person’s unique idea that bring us together as readers. We know we need answers to a common problem or we smile at a reference we know other readers will understand from the same genre.
These individuals can end up writing some of our favourite or most meaningful books, that stay with us long after we’ve finished reading them.
It’s what I keep in mind whenever I’m asked to work on a book.
I don’t think AI can do that.
