I recently finished reading Wired for Story by Lisa Cron. Every chapter has useful, actionable advice for authors which is logically structured and focuses on elements of story and character to thoroughly engage a book’s readers whichever genre an author is writing. Each chapter can be easily referred back to for specific advice, such as how to use flashbacks to enhance the story.

What I thought was interesting is how much received wisdom I had absorbed, and having those beliefs challenged or reinterpreted was helpful. The book being based on and backed by neuroscience research and how reader expectations were formed from it was a revelation.

 I would highly recommend this book.
